A monster book

I was full of trepidation when I started to read Monster Love - friends had highly recommended the novel but did I want to subject myself to hours of depressing reading? I shouldn't have worried - the subject matter is indeed extremely dark but Carol Topolski's wonderful writing skills more than made up for this. The book reads like a highly developed thriller - each chapter is in a different voice, slowly and painfully exposing one facet of the story after another and giving insight into the couple's deeply disturbing world. The multiple narrative creates layer upon layer as the bizarre lives of Sherilyn and Brendan, the book's two main characters, are revealed. The surreal end of the novel left me a little disatisfied but in no way spoiled what is an exceptional novel and one I could not recommend more highly.

Dark and unpleasant

I admired this book and the way that it is written, but I also disliked it intensely because the subject matter is so unpleasant. I read it because friends had liked it and I can see why they did, but at the same time I am sorry that I read it because I feel like it's the kind of book that will haunt me.

I found it difficult to find reviews that explain what the book is about, but it emerges very early in the novel so I don't feel it is a spoiler to say that it's about a young married couple who have an intensely close bond, who find themselves pregnant despite all their plans to avoid having children, and who then abuse, neglect and eventually kill their little girl. I just hated to read parts of the book, didn't want to know these people and felt quite unsatisfied with their inability to process any understanding of what they had done.

Every chapter of the book has a different narrator. Some parts of the story are told by Brendan and Sherilyn (the central couple) while others are written by people who had something to do with them: their family, case officer, neighbours, co-workers etc. Most contribute just their one chapter although the lead characters have more than one. It's an effective technique (although sometimes I wanted to stay with some of the narrators or visit them again) and Topolski brings each different voice to life very well. In an author's note at the end of the book, Topolski explains how she actually started the novel writing a chapter in the voice of the little girl, locked up and confused and I am very grateful that this was omitted. The book is more about the central relationship between Brendan and Sherilyn which is intriguing - they share some psychic connection but also withhold secrets from one another. Ultimately however I think Topolski fails to make that relationship credible.

Why 3 stars? It's a clever book and well written, but it's just such horrible material that I can't recommend it. Having said that, if you are the kind of reader who is drawn to dark novels about very unpleasant crimes and you like spending time inside the heads of monsters, then this is a well written and clever novel (not a thriller, nor a mystery) that you will probably enjoy.

I liked it!

Probably not for everyone, but it saved my sanity while I was on my honeymoon in Saudi Arabia and not able to go out when my only abaya was at the laundry! There weren't many English books available in Saudi Arabia, so I was tickled to find this dark gem at the local bookstore. It's bleak, but I found it believable. And the format was so engaging. If you're interested in a book that's not only interesting, but structured in a clever way, and you don't mind dark, give it a try. I think the author did a great job at creating a believable reason for the heinous crimes that happen everyday in the real world.

The modern version

I loved this book as a kid, so I was excited to find a copy for my daughters. I started reading it and right away, the main character is talking about her dad sending her an email. Whoa! This book was written in 1985! I handed it off to my girls and stopped thinking about it. They both loved it! My oldest said there's an interview with Lois Duncan at the back in which she explains that her publisher asked her to update all of her old books. Apparently, she spent a lot of time figuring out how to destroy cell phones, in order to keep the plots the same. I gave four stars because well, it's not the original, which was fantastic. But 13 and 11 year-olds will still love it and it will make sense in their world. (PS - Amazon still has the original version, if you want to read it.)

Locked In Time

Can you imagine never growing older? Being stuck at the age you are right now for all eternity? If you were Lisette, Gabe or Josie in the novel "Locked In Time", by Lois Duncan, you'd know what it feels like to be the same age for over 100 years. Decades pass, new invention develop, those around you die, but you keep living on... When Nore Robbins goes to live with her dad, who recently remarried Lisette, she begins to sense something about her step-mother and her two kids. Through overhearing mysterious comments and piecing clues together, Nore begins to realize that her new step-family, by some strange occurence, never ages and never will because they are locked in time. The best part about this book is that it has it all (except comedy)... drama, murder, romance, mystery, suspense, science fiction and plenty of real life aspects. Having been written in first person main character, the book gives the reader an inside view on the story. You're right there with Nore as she's hearing the odd fragment of inforamtion and it's almost as if you are helping her piece clues together. The major lesson/moral that was clearest to me from "Locked In Time" was that some secrets just aren't meant to be kept behind closed doors forever. They're bound to be let out in the open sometime, especially if you try to hard to conceal them. Although the book isn't adult-themed, the plot and subtle clues about the ending throughout the book would make it difficult for anyone under 11 to understand and enjoy.

In the stratosphere of 3D technology, this book is instrumental in one's deep understanding on the functionality and detailed approach in tackling a 3D production. From it's carefully designed examples of 3D pictures, to the glasses which come with the book, "3D Storytelling.." is an immersive and exciting read! I highly recommend it to anybody who seeks to learn more about 3D. It's a must have for any filmmaker, student, or artist!!!!!

Bruce and Phil lay out the story in a clear consise manner. This book is for those who want to understand the transition to true 3D storytelling. Too often today filmmakers are in fear of 3D because they really don't understand it. This book goes a long way in solving that.

It doesn't get any better than getting first-hand information from a real expert. The way that The Happy Manager is laid out is a clear indicator that the author knows what she's talking about because it entails everything that you will have learned (benefits) in a list of specific how-to's. Hiring the right people from the start, Strategies for communicating more effectively with your employees, motivation tips and tricks, fostering teamwork, and teaching workers how to have a mindset which encourages them to perform independently are just a few of the key topics covered. As an Entrepreneur myself, what I liked most about the book are the case studies and free checklists that are also provided in the book. Author Adela Masarykova outdid herself in a read that was created to deliver the type of results that will allow a top level manager to lead like a boss without actually being in the office 24-7, 365. An Exemplar of Chess Opening Books

Rizzitano's "How to Beat 1 d4" is an example of how opening repetoire books should be written. The reader can tell how meticulously the author approached this work- all the relevant analysis, along with many suggested improvements from the author himself. The book presents the Queen's Gambit Accepted as the centerpiece of the repetoire, and also offers lines against all of White's second-move alternatives. A welcome bonus is analysis of 3 e3 e5 in the QGA, which allows Black to play alternatives such as 4...Bg4 in the main line after 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 e3. A great work.

Won my first two QGA games after reading this book

I'm an ICCF Master Class player and I recently bought Rizzitano's book "How to beat 1.d4". I ever had problem with black vs 1.d4 and I read with great interest Rizzitano's book. The book was clear, extremely interesting, up to date, with all strategic ideas behind the opening well analysed and explained.

I recently tried the QGA in an ICCF Master Class tournament (EM-M-307) and the result was : +2 =0 -0 that is 100% for the first 2 QGA I ever played!!!!

Compliments to the author: the good result I get in the tournament is fully due to his book!!!

Great Book

This is an amazing book, extremely detailed and thorough. It is a totally complete repertoire against 1.d4. I don't know what the last reviewer is talking about. Contrarily, this one of the most complete and thorough opening repertoire books I've ever seen.

This is your road map when white plays 1.d4. Keep in mind that it's a repertoire book, not an instructional manual on how to play every single move in every single position. (But it comes close!) One thing the book lacks is an "Illustrative Games" section. If this is your only reference, then you will need to either find a supplemental book, well annotated QGA games, or a coach to help you work through the positions once the analysis stops.

The good news is that he basically quotes his sources on every book, game fragment, and annotator. If you want to see more, just pull the game up on your computer and have at it. This is a window into a titled player's opening preparation, so be prepared to do some work to digest the material.

I think this is good for players rated 1800+, because it can be an overwhelming amount of material at some points. It is definitely *not* the "Easy Guide" to the QGA.

I am looking forward to seeing more from the meticulously thorough Rizzitano.

A great work of pedagogy, pitifully destroyed by publishing company Get the print book, instead, worth every penny.

I downloaded a preview to my Kindle Fire HDX, was excited by the subject and eager to study a great work in the tradition of Richard Royall, no less! Cudos to these terrific authors for such a wonderful work. Too bad all that work is wasted by a conspiracy between OUP and Amazon, who will point fingers at each other when queried about who messed up all the mathematical formulae in the text. Great, a 30% discount for an ebook in which 90% of the equations are illegible. Amazon will say that they just provide the software and the publisher is doing something wrong. The publisher will blame Amazon.I don't see how that helps me as a former buyer of this ebook, who has just sent it back for a refund.

The diabetes mellitus bible

I am a freelance medical writer, and use this book as a reference when I'm working on diabetes projects. This is "the" textbook for diabetes mellitus. Like other medical textbooks, the language is very technical and scientific, therefore I would steer away people without a medical background who are looking to better understand diabetes (eg, patients).

This Book is Definitely One-Up!

This is a work of genius. It deserves to be on everyone's top-ten list.

This volume is a collection of all Potter's individual works on the subject of Gamesmanship, One-Upmanship, and Lifemanship. If you can't find this one compendium, go out and beg, borrow, or steal any of the individual books you can lay your hands on. You will laugh uproariously. But you will also learn to recognize the literal, nasty little games people play, and if you are of a mind, you will be instructed in how to play the games yourself.

I've always been rather annoyed when I find an entry in a Match Making column from someone looking for a mate who "Doesn't play games." I've never quite known what that means. It seems to be some generalized, rote admonition against people who don't return phone calls, or something like that. But if the games mentioned in singles columns refer to just the plain meat-and-potatoes sort of maneuvers - here with Stephen Potter you will find a voluptuous smorgasbord of suggested games. You will find ploys of breathtaking diversity and subtlety.

As Potter introduces his subject, the key to being one-up in any social setting is to break the flow of other people's conversation. Put an end to any social momentum they may be building. Throw them off their game. The classic Potter squelch (one which is also illustrated in the movie based on Potter's writings, School for Scoundrels) involves offsetting any success someone at a party may have had by telling a joke. Say someone just scored a big laugh by telling a joke involving a man with one leg. You laugh heartily right along with the others. Then get up off your chair and limp painfully toward the bathroom, mumbling something about a "danged old piece of shrapnel." All the social credit the joke-teller built in the course of the evening will immediately plummet. He and all his appreciative listeners will be made to feel apologetic and guilty and will be effectively silenced.

Not all of Potter's ploys involve directly diminishing someone else though. Some ploys enable you to bolster your own social credit without regard to what others around you are doing. For example, Potter gives a tip on how to be popular with children, an important skill if you are courting a single parent or trying to impress your boss at a party. Potter states that you must talk in a perfectly natural, adult way to the child. Talk to him just as you would talk to one of your golfing partners. You might express concern over your stock portfolio. Confide your fear that pork bellies and crude oil are going down, liable to leave you in a pretty pickle. The toddler may not know what you are saying, but will be fascinated by the strange phrases, and will appreciate your talking to him like an equal. And you will be in like Flynn with the child's parents.

One final example of Potter's brilliant social observation - and then you really must read the book yourself. Potter tells how to always appear to be the youngest, "coolest" person in the room, even if you are well into your nineties and on death's door. Older people assume they must burst onto a party scene with as much upright vigor and energy as they can muster. Do JUST THE OPPOSITE, Potter instructs. Instead, you must appear to be infinitely weary, weary in body and spirit. Don't stand up straight. Slouch against every upright you find. When you come through a doorway, lean for long minutes against the doorframe before proceeding into the room. I imagine if you can effect a long, liquid disaffected slump, like the iconic poster of James Dean - you will have the image of youth down pat. Then as a clinching fillip, Potter advises you to head for a sofa and recline on it. But - the difference between a 99-year-old invalid waning on a couch and a young man stretched disaffectedly there - lies in a small postural detail. When you collapse down on the couch, fling one leg over the back of it. And there you have it - an eternally insouciant young man. No plastic surgery, dieting, or exercise required.

Potter gives page after page of such slaying advice. And he gives the reader the machinations of such expert Lifemen as Gattling-Fenn and Odoreida to follow as example. The Dickensian, oddly apposite names of these (fictional?) characters alone is enough to make them memorable and make you laugh.

But couched in all the laughs you'll get from this book, you will discover a whole coherent psychology of behavior. It preceded the more heavy-handed best-seller Games People Play, and easily presents a more telling interpretation of human motivation than Freud. This truly is a master work.

British humor, very, very British. If you *don't* like losing, develop the skills needed so that you always win. In any social situation a definite hierarchy develops. Potter's work can be considered a manual for anyone seeking to become the top dog. This volume contains four books previously published separately: Gamesmanship, Lifemanship, One-upmanship, and Supermanship. Potter's own work in the field of becoming one-up on one's fellow man is supplemented by the researches of others in various fields: the carmanship of Godfrey Plaste; the art of not rock-climbing of G. Odoreida; the clubmanship of Hugo Coating; and the many contributions of Gattling-Fenn. Recommended reading for anyone wishing to make Machiavelli gasp in admiration . . .

Handbooks For Life

These are the four funniest books I have ever read. And yet, the basic concepts and strategies set forth are exactly what's needed to reign supreme in all situations social and competitive. Many times over the years I have employed some variaton of a Potter "opening" or gambit, often with better results than I had even hoped. Just as many times, I've realized (too late), that I have missed a golden opportunity, or worse, have been "one-upped" myself.
