About the Author
Anthony S. Pitch is the author of “They Have Killed Papa Dead!” on the Lincoln assassination, The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion of 1814, and Our Crime Was Being Jewish. A journalist on four continents, he has appeared on C-SPAN TV, the History Channel, National Geographic TV, Book TV, NPR, and PBS. He lives in Potomac, Maryland.

Compelling Story of a Hideous and Historical Crime

It is not possible to read this account of a lynching in postwar Georgia without feeling a burning sense of anger with each passing page. On a summer day in 1946 four black people (one of them a decorated WWII vet) were lynched near the Moore's Ford bridge in a small Georgia farming community. The deed aroused strong national attention, particularly drawing the personal attention of President Harry Truman and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The scene shortly was over-run by local and state investigators plus a plethora of FBI agents. You would think such a formidable law response would produce the murderers in short order. But it was not to be. Fear and intimidation of the black community and a general campaign of silence in the white pretty much put the kabosh on meaningful testimony to a grand jury. In the end, no one was convicted of the crime. They got away with it. Today, 70 years after the obscenity, Pitch and others are trying heroically to find missing documents and pursue the case to its final accounting. It will be a long-shot. In the meantime, Pitch's book will remind modern readers that there once existed in America places where a culture of lynching of Afro-Americas was practiced and accepted. We may have come a long way since then, but Pitch's compelling, very well-researched-and- written book memorializes the victims and -- who knows -- may lead some day to an accounting of the evil that lurked behind the monstrous crime that occurred near that Georgia bridge that day.

In this engrossing memoir, Saks, a professor of law and psychiatry at the University of Southern California, demonstrates a novelist's skill of creating character, dialogue and suspense. From her extraordinary perspective as both expert and sufferer (diagnosis: Chronic paranoid schizophrenia with acute exacerbation; prognosis: Grave), Saks carries the reader from the early little quirks to the full blown falling apart, flying apart, exploding psychosis. Schizophrenia rolls in like a slow fog, as Saks shows, becoming imperceptibly thicker as time goes on.- Along the way to stability (treatment, not cure), Saks is treated with a pharmacopeia of drugs and by a chorus of therapists. In her jargon-free style, she describes the workings of the drugs (getting med-free, a constant motif) and the ideas of the therapists and physicians (psychologist, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, cardiologist, endocrinologist). Her personal experience of a world in which she is both frightened and frightening is graphically drawn and leads directly to her advocacy of mental patients' civil rights as they confront compulsory medication, civil commitment, the abuse of restraints and the absurdities of the mental care system. She is a strong proponent of talk therapy (While medication had kept me alive, it had been psychoanalysis that helped me find a life worth living). This is heavy reading, but Saks's account will certainly stand out in its field.

At eight years old, Saks began suffering hallucinations and obsessive fears of being attacked. An adolescent experimentation with drugs provoked her parents to enroll her in a drug treatment program. But Saks' incredible self-control masked the fact that she was suffering from a debilitating mental illness. By the time she entered graduate school at Oxford University, her symptoms were so severe—including full-blown psychotic episodes and suicidal fantasies—that she was hospitalized. Through Oxford, law school at Yale, and a move to Los Angeles to work in the law school of the University of California, Saks struggled mightily to balance her ambitions with her illness, which was eventually diagnosed as schizophrenia. Never wanting to concede to her mental illness, Saks founds calm and comfort in a rigorous work routine. An analyst characterized her as having three lives: as Elyn, as Professor Saks, and as the Lady of the Charts mental patient. Other Than That, It Was An Uneventful Flight

What's the "that" referenced above? The answer is provided in the previous sentences, "Over and over, I replayed the previous five years, trying frantically every single moment to keep the demons in my head from invading the plane and savaging the other passengers. From time to time, I considered asking the flight attendant whether she would mind if I jumped out the emergency door".

This is a book about living with schizophrenia, and it is a great book, remarkable in many respects.

Elyn Saks, endowed professor at USC's Gould School of Law, has written a gripping memoir of a life spent grappling with and eventually coming to terms with this disease.

Here's her description of what she was up against, "Schizophrenia rolls in like a slow fog, becoming imperceptively thicker as time goes on. At first, the day is bright enough, the sky is clear, the sunlight warms your shoulders. But soon, you notice a haze beginning to gather around you, and the air feels not quite so warm. After a while, the sun is a dim light bulb behind a heavy cloth. The horizon has vanished into a grey mist, and you feel a thick dampness in your lungs as you stand, cold and wet, in the afternoon dark."

Or said another way, "Consciousness gradually loses its coherence. One's center gives way. The center cannot hold. The "me" becomes a haze, and the solid center from which one experiences reality breaks up like a bad radio signal. There is no longer a sturdy vantage point from which to look out, take things in, assess what's happening. No core holds things together, providing the lens through which to see the world, to make judgments and comprehend risk".

The juxtaposition of the uncanny on the mundane is stark and arresting. Saks writes, "Completely delusional, I still understood essential aspects of how the world worked. For example I was getting my schoolwork done, and I vaguely understood the rule that in a social setting, even with the people I most trusted, I could not ramble on about my psychotic thoughts. To talk about killing children, or burning whole worlds, or being able to destroy cities with my mind was not part of polite conversation".

In the end this tenacious woman overcomes and is able to lead a full and successful life. However, she remains aware of a razor's edge that just won't go away, "My brain was the instrument of my success and my pride, but it also carried all the tools for my destruction".

A memoir with appeal to patients, family, the psychiatry community, and the public as a whole

Elyn R. Saks is an accomplished USC professor of law and psychology. She is working on her PhD in psychiatry, has dual appointments in academia, graduated with honors from Yale Law School, and was a Marshall scholar at Oxford. The publication of her memoir of a life with schizophrenia and acute psychosis marks the first time that her colleagues in the professional world will know of her diagnosis. For decades, Saks lived as a mental patient (the Woman of the Charts), as a shy woman with a small circle of close friends, and as a high-achieving academic who protected her psychological privacy at all costs. Upon learning that she was writing a memoir, friends wondered if Elyn would be reduced to "that schizophrenic with a job" when her story hit the bookshelves.

Saks will never be "that schizophrenic with a job," and she has made a fantastic contribution for the psychiatry community, for patients suffering from social stigma, for anyone who interacts with those who have a diagnosed psychological disorder, and for fans of memoirs. Saks writes candidly about the workings of her mind, which made her such a success in philosophy, law, and psychology, but which also crippled her with delusions and hallucinations. She had a formative experience at a 1970's drug rehab camp (after a minor indiscretion with marijuana) which taught her that drugs were bad and any obstacle could be overcome with sheer force of will. For a schizophrenic, of course, medicine is an absolute necessity, and the disorder can not be overcome with will. Nevertheless, Saks spent decades trying to do just that, fighting her doctor's prescriptions at every turn, secretly reducing her dosages, until finally settling into her career in California with a low dosage of modern medicine and on-going talk therapy. She has stated that the more she accepted her illness, the less her illness defined her, because she was no longer fighting the rip currents of schizophrenia, and instead moving through them.

Saks writes, "While medication had kept me alive, it had been psychoanalysis that helped me find a life worth living." Her illness became full-blown at Oxford, during which time she had to take time off from school (fortunately, she was performing independent study) to go through psychoanalysis. Saks makes profound observations about the differences between mental treatment in the U.K. and the U.S.--restraints are almost never used in the U.K., and certainly not as a punishment for misbehavior, as they are frequently used in the U.S. Also, doctors at Oxford made recommendations, not orders, on patient treatment, and the right of the patient to refuse was a sacred cornerstone. In her legal studies back stateside, Saks focused on the right on patients to refuse medication, as well as the effectiveness and humaneness of using restraints on mental patients. While working as a legal scholar, Saks went through her own personal struggles to find solid psychoanalysis and create a support system in case of psychotic episodes.

For years, schizophrenia was regarded as a grave life sentence. Mothers were even blamed for creating schizophrenic children. Saks notes that while there are many case studies and folk stories about successful people with bipolar disorder, the stories about accomplished schizophrenics are few. Thank you, Ms. Saks, for giving us this story of hope and triumph.

Excellent book

It is estimated that one in 100 people have a form of schizophrenia. This book sheds light on these people and other people with mental health problems. If everyone read this or a book like this we would be more sympathetic, empathetic, and kinder to those suffering from any form of mental illness. It is also helpful to clinicians to know how to help people with mental illness's in a more productive way. Thank you Elyn for your candor and for the courage it took to write this book.

Renzo Piano (Genoa, 1937) studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Milan. Excellent introduction to Piano's works

This book covers virtually every project that Renzo Piano had worked on up until the time of the book's publication. It covers all of his built and unbuilt works, and then more. Did you know that he has designed a car and a ship? Although each project gets only a few pages, the drawings and text are concise and get right to the point. The best part of this book is that the text is in Piano's own words, so that the explanations and commentaries come straight from the source. In his text, he often emphasizes the importance of getting your design built and enjoying the process of building.

In addition to talking about each of his projects, he also discusses his own views at the beginning and end of the book on broad topics like the pursuit of architectural design and the architectural profession. This is particularly beneficial for architecture students and young people who want to know more about the field, and it seems like Piano probably had this in mind when he discusses his views.

The book is now a bit dated, for example late 1990's projects like the Tjibaou Cultural Center had not yet been completed and are presented here in mostly models, drawings, and early construction photos. However, it is still very useful because it offers a terrific first-person insight into one of the most respected architects of recent decades. I truly hope that they will update this excellent book someday, but for now I still recommend it to any Renzo Piano fan and anyone who is interested in architecture.

Excellent collection of Renzo Piano's works

Renzo Piano is one of the most important contemporary architects. Every design he conceives is specific to its location. Piano chooses not to attach himself to an image. His architecture reflects a clear understanding of climate, culture, and construction methods and materials, which work together in harmony to become a building of its own and not a trademark of the designer (such as the automatic association of Richard Meier and his white steel enamel panels).
A student of architecture should keep a library to refer to when coming across unresolved issues in designs. The Logbook by Piano is not only an excellent monograph of his works, but it also provides the architect's own insight for each design, which is more important than any interpretation a critic might have.

Not an history of architecture, but an exibithion of some ideas about life, showed by architecture. Renzo Piano shows himself by his work. Reading this book is quite as the same as listening Renzo that confidentially speaks about what is important in his life, and why. Architecture is, for him, the best way to express his ideas about education, politics, ethics and love. I definitely suggest it.

A humble genius

Vallee's humble genius is commendable. His place in history as one of the greatest minds of 20th-century science is, unfortunately, vastly underrated. As a writer he is captivating and heartwarming, even when he writes of sad nostalgia or career-related frustrations. His grace and graciousness come alive in these pages. His love for his family is beautiful. The depth of his struggle to push the boundaries of knowledge leaves you just as frustrated. This journal offers a rare glimpse into a non-stoned spiritual mind of the 1970's. Then the 1980's arrive and you're left waiting for volume 3.

This book is more of a document of Vallee's interesting career and devoted mind than a book about UFOs, remote viewing, or even science. Chances are this won't be the first Vallee book you read, but if it is you will hopefully seek out his others. It was with extreme pleasure that I learned of this book's recent publication. His insights into the parapsychology research at Stanford in the 1970s are priceless, and his anecdotes of Anton LaVey are original as well. But it is really Jacques' humbleness that makes this a great read even if you are not interested in any of these topics.

Worth the cover price and then some. A true living legend.

EXCELLENT book! -- Whether you are interested in UFOs or Internet history.

This book is an excellent work from SO many perspectives. Vallee's behind-the-scenes experiences belie the claim that the U.S. military and intelligence community abandoned all interest in the UFO phenomenon after the Condon Report. His descriptions of nature, interacting with his family, etc., show the soul of a poet--with the literary talent to match.

Vallee also discusses with an insider's knowledge why the various major UFO organizations of the 1960's and early 70's gradually fell apart, with personal insights about many of the "major players".

For those interested in the origins of the Internet, natural-language databases, electronic conferencing, and *especially* the political wrangling that takes place in companies faced with a paradigm shift from technology and why systems ultimately do or don't get accepted, this is a goldmine.

Vallee also corrects a lot of misinformation that has circulated as fact for years in technical circles. As he points out, most of the people writing about the early history of modern computers, networking and the Internet were children when a lot of these things occurred and a lot of facts have been obscured by myths. For instance, the computer mouse was not developed at Xerox PARC, it was developed almost a *decade* earlier.

It is also fascinating to see Vallee's 30-year old comments about how "some day there will be electronic networking communities and people will form social networks through computers". But then, again, as he points out, some people told him ... "Nah, that's never gonna happen."

Vallee also discusses quite a bit about military psychic research about remote viewing, psychokinesis, efforts to kill by "thought" power, etc. He points out that the U.S. military was concerned about the possibility that someone with telekinetic powers could trigger a nuclear weapon.

I was also quite surprised how many famous people Vallee didn't simply meet but got to be fairly friendly with, including Anton Levay, Timothy Leary, Ira Einhorn, Doug Engelbart, Uri Geller, Andria Puharich and many others.

Jacques Vallee's journals continue in California

The second volume of Jacques Vallee's personal journals (revised edition published 2009) takes up the narrative in summer 1970, when following the publication of `Passport to Magonia' the author moved his young family to Northern California and took a job with Stanford University's nascent computer department as an information retrieval specialist. The book finishes in 1980 with the publication of `Messengers of Deception'.

On p485, the author muses "A diary is the record of an age...history is a set of harmonious curves, while a diary plots individual points around the curve, precisely," an excellent summary. Within these pages are detailed narratives recording Vallee's involvement with the remote viewing and psi-research programs at SRI (financed by the CIA) and his dealings with people like Ingo Swann, Uri Geller and Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell; his continuing relationships with people like Allen Hynek, Peter Sturrock and Aime Michel; the invention of the computer mouse (by Vallee's colleague Douglas Engelbert) and development of networks from which grew the internet; and observations about political and societal trends in the USA and Europe. Vallee also gets to know Steven Spielberg, with whom he discusses the alien-contact scenario postulated in the film `Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (Spielberg based the character played in the film by Francois Truffaut on Vallee himself, and invited Jacques and Janine to the premiere).

California in 1970 was at the leading edge of the `hippie movement' summarised by Vallee as "...an age that defied all conventions but failed miserably to set new standards" (p463). Jacques was definitely not a fan of `mind-expanding drugs' or of the `sexual revolution':

"As revolutions go, this one is pathetic. America struggles with an emotional heritage heavy with puritanical repression...history is full of examples of morally permissive political dictatorships...I see the US moving in a short time from hypocritical puritanism to hypocritical promiscuity" (p39).

Working with computer networks in Northern California in the early 1970s, Vallee was at the forefront of the IT revolution and surrounded by cyber-visionaries who foresaw the internet age 20 years ahead of its actuality:

"This project prefigures a network-based society which will not be attained for another 10, 20 or 30 years...Engelbart's vision is of instantaneous exchanges over wires of intelligence, of a vast pool of information available to everyone..." (p123)

Jacques discourses warmly on family matters and his children as they grow up, recounts many anecdotes of life in North California during these years and the Vallees' various house moves, and his extensive travels to Europe and elsewhere.

`FS volume 2' also contains accounts of the author's personal experiences of telepathy and prophetic dreams and a great deal of material about his investigation of cults and esoteric movements including the Rosicrucians, `Bo and Peep', Melchizedek and the life and work of British occultist Aleister Crowley. Don Hanlon, who in Chicago in the 1960s introduced Vallee to the idea that some aspects of the UFO phenomenon superficially resembled Marian apparitions and traditional European fairy tales (the source material for PtM) became a disciple of Crowley and stimulated Vallee's interest in this whole area of human experience, later explored in his 1979 book `Messengers of Deception'. Vallee admits his own exploration of the UFO phenomenon has gone up a blind alley but retains a refreshingly open mind:

"...my search, so far, has been a failure. If I ever lose everything, I hope to keep one thing the longest, namely the ability to doubt my own theories, question my own beliefs" (p281).

With detailed accounts of `The Invisible College' and the contemporaneous `Edge of Reality' projects, FS2 is almost - but not quite - up to the page-turning standard of FS1. Unfortunately Vallee's scorn for those who don't completely share his views (which turns out to be just about everybody) shines a little too strongly, and towards the end of these journals the arrogance - there's no other word for it - frankly becomes tiresome. For this reason I would award this second volume four stars instead of five, but its 491 pages still make for a deeply engaging and (mostly) intelligent, thought-provoking read.

On one of Aime Michel's visits to the Vallees in California, we learn of his far-sighted vision of an internet-dominated future and the only viable life-philosophy of how to deal with it:

"Aime said the only good strategy in life was to know and participate, to share in the knowledge, and then retire in silence and denial to some faraway place, turning inside, refusing to adapt: `In the information-rich world, the only people who will survive will be the invisibles, the very poor, and those who cannot or will not communicate'" (p137) - from a 2013 perspective, this looks prophetic indeed.

I was a little disappointed in the length. I thought it would be longer, but it was thought provoking and I am loaning it to sopme friends.
