well written book. straight to the point, no bulls***

the book is written in a simple language, making it easy to understand. at the same time, the contents are divided into many short chapters, making it such an 'achievement' after you finished reading a chapter. You can't wait to finish reading the next one. the examples chosen are clear, straight to the point and there is not much repetition (unlike some other books). The strategy is simple and easy to understand (similar to Dogs of the Dow). I highly recommend this book for anyone who just started learning dividend investing. Although the example are taken from London Stock Exchange, the concepts can easily be extended to any other market.

Book is for UK readers; not US readers

The book is written for UK readers. Stocks mentioned in the book are from UK stock market and the book uses UK currency like pounds and not US dollars. The appendix contains a list of dividend companies from the FTSE 350 companies. The information on taxes covers UK tax laws. Click on the 'Look Inside' link for this book and look at the "What this book covers" title and you'll see it even mentions, "The focus is the UK stock market...."

In a class all its own

Dr. Young-Eisendrath's thesis is that ours is the first era in history when men and women en masse have the potential to have emotionally intimate, honest relationships. In the past the power in a male-female relationship was too off balance for true intimacy.
Since this potential is a recent phenomenon, very few models exist for a gender-opposite relationship based on equality. The good doctor builds such a model, based on extensive research, and it is flexible enough for all of us.

An Important Premise

Wow! I cannot believe this phenomenal book has only one review (so far, or right now) I ordered it after reading another title by the same author ('Resilient Spirit' - another very worthwhile book, by the way, about transforming suffering into growth & insight... and that topic applies to just about everybody on the planet, eh? After all, the very fundamental premise of Buddhism is that suffering is a cold hard fact. How we learn to deal with it, understand it, approach it, and ourselves, etc is the important work of each lifetime and yes in addition to being a Jungian analyst the author is also a follower of the Buddhist path.) Now, back to this book: I ordered it after reading 'Resilient Spirit' and by the time I had read the first 100 or so pages I wanted to share it with nearly everyone I know... I was thinking "Everyone could benefit from this!" I ended up loaning my copy to my therapist who immediately made many approving sounds about the author's premise (at least in the introduction).

Seriously, anyone who is in a relationship, married, dating, whatever, could benefit from what Ms Eisendrath shares in this book. It won't necessarily be an easy ride but it will open up some (many!) eyes and many hearts (hopefully!) with it's clear and patient wisdom. AND the amazing thing is - looking at the prices above here... one can have a copy of this for less that is cost to print the thing!

Eisendrath's basic premise in "You're Not What I Expected" starts with true gender equality which historically has not been possible until recently because of entrenched cultural attitudes and biases. Let's grow, let's evolve, let's move into the next logical phase of human development (one that is long long overdue!) by taking advantage of this historical opportunity for actual equality and real partnership with our most intimate companions. If you've read Riane Eisler's "Power of Partnership" check this book, it is sure to be of interest to you and will expand your thinking (and feeling) on a topic that it both important and "close to home."

HUGE book and "hard" reading with a life change

this is a HUGE book to read. just at the start but already im having my thoughts about relationship reworked, and how to deal with them. really fascinating book and even it's hard reading and the self-reflection afterwards ist at least for me devastating but life changing. if you want just easy reading, don't get this, if you want some real insight into what you feel - GO GO GO and buy it!

The great strength of this book is its reintroduction of Aquinas, Luther, and Calvin to the postmodern theological conversation. Readers will encounter them here in ways that, to Placher's credit, will render the object of postmodern criticisms of "classical theism" thoroughly strange. That object, Placher maintains, is much more appropriately identified with a wrong turn taken by philosophy and theology in the seventeenth century, which he describes as a domestication of transcendence. Taylor's a-theology will find much of value in this beautifully and thoughtfully written account of God's essential "wildness." Ten Stars, Actually

I am sorry that this book is not available in hardcover; it's one that my library cannot be without. One cannot describe it without superlatives. Although I am an Orthodox Christian, the author has convinced me that there is profound theological thought outside Orthodoxy. (Not all Orthodox Christians feel this way.) Placher's thesis, that the way we think about God went awry back at the dawn of modernity, and that theology has not recovered from its ill-advised dalliance with the moderns, is superbly argued from cover to cover. If one reads between the lines, however, one realizes that the book raises questions which no religious believer can afford to ignore--questions such as "what does it mean to be a believer?", and "what does it mean to be human?" The epistemological ideal which animates the discourse of modernity is that of the detached, disinterested, impersonal spectator of reality. It started with Descartes and we've not seen the end of it yet. Placher understands that when this cognitivist presupposition informs our theological enterprise, the result is a "theology" which is more like Vedanta, Buddhism, or New Age monism than Christianity. (He doesn't mention them, but he would, if he were interested in getting into comparative religion.) In truth, these "Eastern" religions, especially as they appear in the West as "the New Spirituality," owe more to modernity and the ideals of the European Enlightenment than they would care to admit. A corollary of the Cartesian model is that man is cognitively self-sufficient. And since knowledge is our human way of making sense of the world, it's a short step to the notion that human being is wholly self-sufficient. We all know that Spinoza took up this idea and ran with it. Be that as it may, how anyone (except, perhaps, Bishop Spong) can square this idea with the fundamental Christian tenet of finite, fallen man is a mystery to me, as it must be to any Christian inclined to critical thinking. To endeavor to have a "God's eye view" of God (or anything else) is, in essence, to forsake one's humanity for the sake of becoming God. This is the cardinal sin, which is responsible for our fallen state in the first place. And it is just what "the New Spirituality," however it is packaged, would have us believe. It all started here in the West when one Swami Vivekananda gave an electrifying speech at the Parliament of World Religions in 1893. Ever since, people who are for one reason or another disenchanted with their own religious tradition have been standing in line to get their share of whatever it is that works the marvelous alchemy of transforming men into gods. (Why is it that so many people manage to read Genesis 1 and 2 nowadays, and come away believing that the point of the story of man's fall is that Adam and Eve ate a piece of fruit?)

Placher does a masterly job of discussing Luther and Calvin, as I would expect him to. But his knowledge of and appreciation for the Scholastics make this book an excellent source of information for anyone working in that area. His chapter on the use of analogy in Aquinas and Cajetan is the best introduction to that subject I've ever seen. What tipped me off that Placher really knows what he's talking about is that he referred to Aquinas' magnum opus by its correct name "Summa Theologiae," rather than "Summa Theologica"--the variant preferred by pedants, dabblers, and name droppers since time immemorial.

In the coming years, I believe, Placher's thesis or something very much like it will come to dominate theological discourse, especially when Christian theologians wake up to the fact that to do theology in slavish deference to modernity is to take it down a dead-end road. Nowadays, even honest religious seekers are running with the herd headlong into the abyss of "the New Spirituality." They don't need any encouragement in that direction from misguided theologians. The professionals would do well to read and learn from a theologian's theologian. For my part, I'm no theologian, but I've been reading Placher's book along with Heidegger's "Being and Time," with tantalizing results. This is a Fantastic Book, Super Enlightening

Provides an excellent, well-written historical account of how modern thinking about God got screwed up in the 17th century. So many people need to understand this history--perhaps especially modern confessional Protestants, perhaps particularly in the Reformed tradition, perhaps especially those in the PCA and OPC. I highly recommend it as well worth the read. In fact (contrary to the three-star review here), it is not that challenging intellectually. The book does presumes a serious interest in the matter and some historical background knowledge, but it couldn't have been more clearly written. The book also helps to make very clear why Karl Barth is so important in the 20th century, which is important.

William Placher offers a fascinating overview of the history of the doctrine of God, and the radical shift that he observes in the Seventeenth Century: "Before the seventeenth century, most Christian theologians were struck by the mystery and wholly otherness of God, and the inadequacy of any human categories as applied to God." (6) This shift was the both "dumbing God down" and "lifting man up." God became another "object" to be studied like the rest of the world, and Man was filled with confidence in his own rational abilities to do anything he set his mind to.

Placher starts with the good old days: Aquinas and his account of "Analogical Predication," that is, we can't speak univocally or equivocally about God and creatures, but analogicall; Luther, and his doctrine of "The Hidden God"; and Calvin's doctrine of faith, and reluctance to "speculate" beyond what Scripture has revealed.

The shift away from this careful accounting of God's transcendence affected three main areas. First, the question of "causality." When something happens in the world, who caused it? God, or the natural created cause? This way of framing the question, Placher notes, puts God on the same playing field as the world that he made, instead of transcendent of those categories. This plays out, second, in the question of "Grace and Works." When God's transcendence is reduced, everything depends on us. Finally, in a world where everything is subjected to the criticisms of rationalism, the doctrine of the Trinity is a major problem.

Placher advocates for a return to the view of God espoused by Aquinas, Luther, and Calvin. He makes a strong case for God's transcendence that leaves the reader humbled.

A major critique of the book, however, is his inability to move beyond "speaking about God" to knowing anything about God at all. It seems that Placher has over-reacted to the hubris of modernism to a sub-biblical account of God. Nevertheless, Placher offers an extremely helpful corrective to "molding God into our own image," and a way to think through several related theological issues. After reading Placher, though, one must return again to Scripture, which was given so that we "might know God" not just say certain things about him.

Excellent. A must for military history buffs. Made up mainly of "after action reports" of this little known unit of black men. Free blacks and slaves purchased from the Caribbean island plantations made up these units. THey fought gallantly in many arenas of conflict, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East. They even made it as far North as New Orleans in 1812. West indians fighting in the good old USA. Who knew.

The 1988 funeral of famed trumpet player and vocalist Chet Baker in L.A. was emblematic of the disorder and dysfunction of his life though he was world famous, only a small clique of loyal fans and family attended, and they were fighting with one another. Even his death in Amsterdam (possibly an overdose or drug-related murder) was an unsettled, sordid enigma. Gavin's elegantly written and thoroughly researched biography traces the astonishing highs and lows of Baker's personal and professional life. Born in 1929 in Oklahoma to a doting mother and alcoholic father, he spent 18 months in the army at age 17 before his prodigious talent blossomed when he went back to high school. Aggressively pursuing his career, he became famous for both his trumpet playing and his equally impressive hard drug habit, both of which increased over the next two decades. Gavin is superb at placing Baker in a clearly defined cultural context the "defiant new youth culture: Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, and James Dean, all of whom symbolized disgust with every false hope infecting America" and in explicating Baker's out-of-control actions. Gavin has an unerring eye for the salient detail as he charts the continual down-spiraling of the trumpeter's life. Drawing upon a wealth of personal interviews, music journal reviews, national media, jazz criticism and a sound sociological sense of the period, Gavin has produced a stark, troubling portrait of both the artist and his times.

There's a point at which the reporting of salacious or sadistic behavior overwhelms more important aspects of a person's life. Gavin (Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret) comes perilously close to crossing that line in this biography of jazz trumpeter Baker, whose drug-addled life is well known to music fans. Often, Gavin examines the minutest details of Baker's heroin abuse at the expense of detailing his musical triumphs. While he provides valuable information on Baker's neglect and bad treatment of family and friends, as well as his European and Japanese tours, he fails to demonstrate an understanding of his subject's music, which demands respect. Art Pepper's Straight Life is still one of the best examples of jazz biography/autobiography; it not only conveys the toll that heroin took on Pepper (one of Baker's contemporaries) but also gives a good feel for the music. Readers looking for a less commercial (though slightly more fawning) biography are directed to Jeroen de Valk's Chet Baker. Recommended with reservations for academic and public libraries. Jazz trumpet player and singer Chet Baker is remembered today mainly for his angelic face and his ethereal singing voice. His life, as Gavin makes clear in this compelling but painful biography, was utterly unlike his music. Vaulted into sudden fame by his work with Gerry Mulligan in the early 1950s, the photogenic Baker found himself the heartthrob of female jazz fans and the winner of numerous polls for favorite trumpet player. This early adulation as the Great White Hope of jazz earned Baker the enmity of dues-paying black musicians and helped launch him on the self-destructive lifestyle that eventually ruined his looks and wasted his talent. A full-tilt heroin addict for more than 30 years, the once-angelic Baker soon became the antithesis of his romantic music. Gavin chronicles it all, following Baker on the endless search for his next score and describing the failed relationships and missed opportunities left in his wake. And yet, even near the end, his face ravaged and his body covered with abscesses, Baker could still, on occasion, play and sing beautifully. A difficult book to read but an eye-opening reminder of the chasm that sometimes separates life and art. Bill Ott

Where's the music?

While this book will certainly make compelling reading for any Chet Baker fan, or any follower of the 1950s-60s jazz scene, be prepared for a frigid treatment of the subject. Mr. Gavin may have a knack for writing about jazz musicians, but he neither understands nor appreciates the music itself one whit. There was a definite gap in the Chet Baker bio market, and Gavin has filled it. Unfortunately, he has not only taken the same angle that the tabloids always did, covering the drugs-and-domestic-violence aspect of Chet Baker, but he has gone them one better--to suit his theme he paints Baker not as a hip musician, which he was, but as a bumbling Okie square, who could never keep up with the music's 'advances'. Baker's conservative opinions of free jazz and fusion, to name just one example, are held up to ridicule. He is dismissed as being 'incapable' of such 'catharsis', as if his opinion were formed out of jealousy or open-mouthed incomprehension. In fact, Miles Davis, who is repeatedly held up as an example of what a great musician is made of so Baker can pale in comparison, despised free jazz. For that matter, many very hip black jazz musicians hated free jazz, and fusion as well. Louis Armstrong thought bebop itself was a joke. All the usual jazz cliches are resurrected here: white jazz is intellectual and precise but lacks feeling, while black jazz is earthy, charged with life and dripping with soul, etc. Except for frequent put-downs of Baker's music for its alleged "lack of feeling" (what, if not feeling, is Baker's music known for?) Gavin barely mentions any of Baker's recorded legacy, aside from occasional session details which always involved Chet's forgetting the date because he was stoned, and his subsequent lack of blowing power when finally coaxed into the studio. His quiet, intimate music is repeatedly dismissed as 'cold' or 'dead', either because Gavin apparently cannot understand feeling unless it is loud, sweaty and intense, or because any other analysis would complicate his single-minded theme. History features no shortage of creeps, louses or idiot savants who packed their music with feeling--Mozart anyone? Charlie Parker? Miles? Then what's all the fuss about? Why do we listen to this man's music 30, 40 and 50 years after it's been recorded? Why aren't we listening to Abbey Lincoln's or Albert Ayler's or any of the other cathartic free jazz or fusion that Gavin holds up as supreme examples of hip? If you didn't know before reading the book, you won't know after.

one of the saddest stories ever told

It's difficult to recreate the arrival of Chet Baker to the world of jazz. At that time, around 1950, the trumpet masters were Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespe, Fats Navarro, and the Stan Kenton trumpet section, with Maynard Fergueson, and Buddy Childers. These "monsters" played above high C. F's, G's, and yes even DOUBLE high C's were their daily vocabulary. Along comes a kid from Oklahoma, whose family settles near LA, who never practices, has no high register(if he ever played a high C, I've never heard it) and decides to confront these guys, and the public with his idea of jazz, and jazz singing.He is an immediate sensation. His chamber music approach to jazz trumpet playing affects many people as does his singing. There are those who rate him a spinoff of Miles Davis, and that his singing isn't singing at all. I rate him a true master in both categories. The only fly in the ointment was his discovery and love of heroin. It superceded everything in his life---loved ones(some say he only loved heroin) children, musical associates etc. James Gavin does a masterful job recreating a life if possible, more tragic than Art Pepper's, or Charley Parker's. It's not for the faint of heart. If you worship every note and vocal of this master as I do, it's a must.

La Famosa santera santiaguera Rosa Torrez (Shango Gumi) quien fuero una de las primeras santeras de esa ciudad y nieta de Ma. What price is Belle willing to pay to feel alive and free?

I loved Belle in Alexander and Clara's books, and I couldn't wait for her story. She's always played a part for everyone in her life, but she never really had anything for herself. In Crave Me, Geneva Lee introduces Belle to the man she needs to help free herself from her family/life's constrains, but it comes at a price because the man who owns her body and her heart is a man full of secrets and surrounded by dangerous people, so Belle is going to need to decide if she can live with all of his predilections and the mystery that surrounds his life or refuse to give into her cravings for him, which is not an easy decision when the heart and body want one thing and the mind is saying something completely different.

Smith Price is an enigma throughout the story; there are multiple layers to his personality as well as his duplicity, and it’s quite unclear what his end game is with Belle and his associates. But one thing is for sure, Price is a calculated man who takes risks, but those actions have to be worth it, and it seems as if Belle was meant to be one thing and then turned into something else, and he doesn’t quite know what to do with that yet, but he’s working on it. I’m glad Ms. Lee gives readers Price’s perspective because it’s necessary to understand the strategies behind his decisions and the conflicting feelings he has as he starts a physical relationship with Belle.

Geneva Lee expertly crafts a tale of sex, intrigue, and passion. Belle didn't want to give into her desire for Price, but through Lee's writing, readers understand that it was inevitable because he made her feel more alive than she's ever been. But the danger is lurking and readers will have to wait for the continuation of Belle's story to see what Price is willing to do/sacrifice for the woman who seems to own his soul.

Lame! Belle isn't even the same character as she was in the other series! She was funny, strong, secure in herself and loyal but in this book she was a ridiculous and insecure. She was annoying! I was so disappointed in this. It was like a different character!! Terribvle

DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! It ended and I need more. It is even more than need. I CRAVE MORE!!! In true Geneva Lee fashion the story captures you from the beginning and doesn't leave you to normally breathe until the last word. Whether you will be panting from the hotness of the scenes or you will be on your toes from the promise of danger and suspense, you won't be able to put the book down. The story is intriguing and even I dare say addictive. And I don't think there is anything I can say about the characters. They are simply enchanting.

Smith is one hot piece of dominant man candy. With his dark wavy hair and mesmerizing green eyes, you will fall for him from the beginning. And when you add to that his dominant alpha behavior and hi penchant for kink in the bedroom, you just don't stand a chance. He is simply addictive ;) Similarly to other books in the genre, when he meets Belle, he falls hard. But he has dark secrets that can destroy everything they build together. But no matter what, he is ready to protect Belle with his own life. In a way the story reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. Only it's a lot naughtier and hotter :D

Belle is a well known character from the previous books in the series. You probably know her as the sweet best friend of Clara. The one who was betrayed in the worst way possible and left to gather the pieces of her life. In this new book, she is shown in a new light and some of her secrets and demons are revealed. Belle has an inner strength that Smith manages to tease out of her. He also helps her to find her confidence again and at the same time unleashes the sex kitten hiding inside :)

And if all that's not enough for you, you will get to revisit with the characters from the previous books. There are a few adorable scenes with Clara and Alexander. And of course, let's not forget Edward. He definitely livens up the story and add some quite funny scenes ;)

So in a few words, this isn't a book you want to miss. I loved the original books in the Royals Saga series and I think that this new one is the perfect addition to the series. It is also the perfect beginning of a new incredible romantic story. I can honestly say that I didn't get enough from this book. When I finished it, I just wanted more. I am really hoping that the next book comes out soon because otherwise I will have withdrawal issues. I mean, I do need regular doses of Smith :D I just feel obliged to say that if I could I would give this book 5 times 5 stars :D

"SEVERE" Child Alienation

This book is particularly recommended for "rejected" parents of "SEVERELY" alienated children - rather than of children who are merely "mildly" or "moderately" alienated.

The book's subject is popularly known as the "parental alienation syndrome" (PAS), a misnomer. This book's real subject is alienated children, not alienated parents.

In fact, authors of some of this book's chapters explicitly state that "Parental Alienation" is a misnomer, and that the correct term for this condition should be "Child Alienation" - which is the term I used in the title of this "customer review."

When a "rejected" parent's child is "SEVERELY" alienated, the rejected parent may need "advanced" or "graduate" education in "PAS," particularly "SEVERE" child alienation. Then this is the book for you - a larger format book with perhaps twice the text on each page than on the pages of the more popular books on "PAS" - i.e., the select "PAS" books on which I have already posted "customer reviews" here on AMAZON.com, all of which select "PAS" books I have given "five star" ratings.

Parents of "SEVERELY" alienated children are confronted by the possibly inevitable prospect noted by the female commentator in "Chapter 8 - Tips for Kids," of Dr. Warshak's DVD entitled WELCOME BACK, PLUTO:

"When children first start becoming alienated, they don't realize that they are going down a path that may end in a COMPLETE LOSS of a parent . . . before they know it, alienated children have BOXED THEMSELVES INTO A CORNER. Even if [these SEVERELY alienated children] do reconnect with a [rejected] parent in the future, NOTHING can EVER MAKE UP FOR ALL THE LOST TIME."

Among all of the excellent chapters in this book, particularly noted for "rejected parents" are Chapter 13, "Factors Affecting Reconciliation Between the Child and Target Parent," and Chapter 21, "Beyond Parental Alienation Syndrome: Reconciling the Alienated Child and the Lost Parent."

This book's 34 Chapters are authored by an international team of 31 scholars, demonstrating that PAS (ergo, child alienation) is not a problem unique to the U.S., but is a well-recognized problem of international proportions.

This advanced and comprehensive book should also be required reading for any "therapist," etc., counseling a SEVERELY alienated child, or any professional (e.g., court evaluator or guardian ad litem) involved providing advice to a court re the "best interests of the child" in contested child custody cases involving SEVERELY alienated children.

This landmark book (2006) is notably dedicated to the memory of Dr. Richard A. Gardner, whose prolific professional work in child psychiatry first publicized the condition of child alienation and brought this condition to the world's attention, and who coined the term "parental alienation syndrome" to label this condition. Significantly, the text of this book's dedication, by Dr. Richard A. Warshak, specifically utilizes the term "child alienation" rather than "parental alienation."

NOTE: As noted in my "customer review" here on AMAZON.com of Dr. Richard A. Warshak's excellent book entitled DIVORCE POISON, I was already drafting this "customer review" of THE INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK OF PARENTAL ALIENATION SYNDROME in April, 2011. This INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK is perhaps a mandatory adjunct to DIVORCE POISON, for "rejected" parents of SEVERE child alienation.

Indeed, in 2009, being unrepresented by an attorney, I introduced, as an item of evidence, a copy of this book into the official court record of the child custody case involving my daughter. The corrupt judge refused to either look at the book; inform himself of this book's contents; or examine, discuss, or otherwise address this book's relevant contents, thereby deliberately ignoring international experts' opinions relevant to the "best interests" of my daughter, and of my supposed rights as the father of my daughter who - even as of the date of 2009 - was already "SEVERELY" alienated from me.

The Parental Alienation Syndrome and Gender Bias in courts

I just read Chapter 30 "The Parental Alienation Syndrome and Gender Bias in the Courts" written by Attorney Jeffery Leving in this book. Jeffery Leving's chapter was fantastic and very helpful to me as a parent. It also lead me to his book "Fathers Rights" which opened my eyes to the unfortunate gender bias in our legal system.
