The Nineties With A Vengeance

A NEW HYMNAL FOR COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS (1992) is an odd pew hymnal and if anything, its pecularities have become more apparent in the over 20 years since its introduction. Layout is bland, with common names of hymns titled only slightly larger (and not emphasized) than the overall proceedings. The not-quite-complete chanted Psalter (hymnodists must hate Psalm 49!) intrudes partway into the hymns for no reason of logic or sequence I could discover and is followed by some sung Psalms in regular layout. The 575 hymnic entries are an unimpressive total considering that the Psalms included and even the antiphon for them are part of the count. There was no room in this book for "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning," "Let All Things Now Living," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "All Things Bright and Beautiful," or "O Little Town of Bethlehem" using the more common tune setting ST. LOUIS. Yet there is room for some odd incursions, apparently under the name of inclusiveness: "Who is She, neither male nor female?" asks no. 15, apparently unaware that the first three words made the rhetorical question unnecessary and impossible. "Guide Me, O, Thou Great Jehovah" was rewritten to "Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer"; yet to me it is just as archaic to use "ever" to mean "always" as it was to strike the pronoun "Thou." The retail price of this book is outlandish (at this time, $38.00) and for that amount of money one could buy two of almost any denominational hymnal, or three of most nondenominational hymnals, any of which are more likely to serve.

This book covers the techniques of the various styles of Silat. At 166 pgs and 6 chapters, the book is best divided into 4 sections:
Striking tools/history (hand techniques covered like in karate manuals only with the weapons context of Silat Hands vs the Knife (that's right, you get that FIRST) Training Exercises (stances and 15 technique drills) Combat situations (covers empty hand attacks and some ground work)
The perfect companion to Draeger's "Fighting and Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago", this is more technique oriented ....... I personally liked the hands vs knife section of the book.

Short but excellent intro

This is a good, brief intro to Silat, covering a number of different styles and techniques, including both empty hands and weapons. Draeger's famous bigger book was groundbreaking and this book although shorter continues that tradition. Of course nowadays there are dozens if not hundreds of videos on Silat but at the time these books were all there was. I have an original copy from 1970. Like the previous reviewer I never expected to see it again anywhere. A true piece of martial arts publishing history.

Psychology

It's a good book for a Psychology intro class. Multiple chapters that go into details about Cognitive thinking, Child Development, Adult Behaviors, Perception and much much more. I only got this book because my Psych instructor is using this book, but if you want to learn psychology on your own then this is a good text book to do it with, there is a test at the end of each chapter, and the answers are provided on the back of the book... awesome for self study. Highly recommend for school / personal use. (beautiful hardback by the way, stunning.)

About the Author

Excellent resource for beginning scientists

My 9 year old God daughter adores this book. She's very interested in climate science and this was perfect. She had no trouble with the material and got a kick out of the videos you can get with the downloadable content.

Dictionary of Flowers

This is a lovely little book. However, I wanted more pictures of more flowers. I also would like a few more definitions.

Disappointed. I had hoped it would contain all the flowers in the list at the end of The Language of Flowers.
It only contains 50 out of the couple of hundred in Diffenbaugh's list.

A Decent Modern Flower Dictionary

I bought this flower dictionary after reading "The Language of Flowers." My interest in floriography had been piqued by the novel and I was eager to memorize the meanings behind as many flowers as I could.
The book took about 12 days to reach me. I was excited to flip through the first 50 illustrated flowers, but parts of their descriptions lacked something. Rather than learning about the poetic meanings behind the flowers, I was informed of rather boring practises that took place hundreds of years ago. My only complaint would be such. Other than that, I adore the flower dictionary and use it regularly.

Read this with my girls and loved it.

This was a great book when it came out in the original issues. I read it with my girls--7 and 9, respectively--and it was practically our favorite comic. We were sad when Marvel cancelled this series and hoped it would come back after Spider Island. Alas, it looks like this is it. But at least it's a self-contained story, and one that you can read with your own girls.

So much potential... (Spoilers)

Perhaps I went into this book with the wrong expectations. I wanted to see Anya, a Hispanic girl hero, grow in a slice-of-life/coming-into-her-own story. The death of her father through the acts of super villians is such an overused trope in comics, especially Marvel Spider-books. It's the reason I walked away from the wonderful Mile Morales storyline in Ultimate Spider-Man, and it was disappointing here as well. Family connections should provide more story hooks; being an orphan should not be the rule of thumb for being a hero. I also wanted this book to be something I could share with my daughter, but the father dying thing made this a "save for later." My expectations aside, this was well-written and has great art. If you can overlook the above concerns, this is still worth a read. Using relevant social media doesn't work in many attempts, but her "tweeting" seemed organic and appropriate for the tone of the book.

daughter needed a book to go along with her Halloween costume for school. not only did this make the grade she actually enjoyed reading it as well. She is 8 years old if that matters.
