A tad dogmatic, but very clear and analytical....

Schick and Vaughn do a fine job of presenting and explaining philosophical problems and theories about free will, the relationship of body and mind, personal identity, morality, the existence of God, and the limits of knowledge. Their presentation is rather rigorous for an introductory text, but their frequent use of thought experiments helps make very abstract topics more accessible. Yes, they do take stands on the issues they discuss, and their secularist axe-grinding can come across as somewhat heavy handed. It can certainly antagonize some students and readers. But this is a minor flaw in an otherwise high quality introductory text. Rather than trying to maintain bogus neutrality, Schick and Vaughn actually "do" philosophy and show how one can arrive at conclusions--even disputable conclusions--using philosophy's methods, and this is to their credit. As for Mr. Newman's sarcastic comment that "all of the great minds that approached" divine command theory in the past are not up to Schick and Vaughn's "genius"--may I ask which great minds he has in mind? It is true that many great religious thinkers can be classified as divine command theorists. But if we look at the tradition of great Western philosophers, many (and probably most) are not. What about Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, and Mill, just to name a few? Moreover, some of these have dismissed divine command theory as pithily as our textbook authors, so Schick and Vaughn are hardly being revolutionary, let alone irresponsibly impudent, when, for example, they follow Leibniz in rejecting the divine command approach. All in all, this is a very solid introductory textbook that emphasizes how to think philosophically. I highly recommend it.

I got this edition for my introductory philosophy course. I found many of the classical and medieval arguments to be poorly stated. I would avoid using this book period.

A great study guide for a great study

After all these years, Sproul's "Holiness of God" series is still one of the best and this study guide makes it that much better - especially when viewing the series in a group setting. Bridges and Ingram ask thought provking questions that help you go deeper with what Sproul has taught, enabling you to get the maximum benefit out of the series. It has been a real help to me as I have lead a discussion on this series in our church.

About the Author
Michael J. Sandretto is a lecturer at the University of Illinois, a valuation consultant, and an economic damages expert witness. He is also president and co-founder of Investments Analytics, Inc., a firm that develops valuation software. Sandretto earned his doctorate at University of Illinois and was corporate controller of Knowles Electronics in Chicago. He has taught courses in financial reporting, financial statement analysis, cost and managerial accounting, and a wide range of executive development classes, including those for four of the five largest Chinese banks. He has written more than 100 cases since leaving Harvard and has thoroughly tested them in his classes.

A "Must-Have" whittler's book.

I recently purchased this book after seeing Chris Lubkemann demonstrate his rooster carving techniques on the FYI channel. With the help of this book and a little previous wood working experience, I was able to whittle three roosters and a hen from branches collected in my own yard. This book is a tidy, complete, well-illustrated user's guide to whittling twigs and branches. He provides clear step-by-step instructions, and openly shares his opinions and experiences with various types of wood, knives, finishes, etc. As with all really good reference works, I find myself going back and forth between whittling and re-reading the book. I learn something new with each closer look at these pages. Lubkemann's rocking chair philosophy explores what an average person can accomplish with a twenty-dollar pocket knife and a few branches that are absolutely free. I applaud not only his uncluttered approach to this noble craft, but his genuine desire to pass it along to anyone who is interested. An aside: this book is an excellent gift idea for anyone interested in folk art, woodcraft, or chickens.

If you love to whittle, this book is full of ideas to expand that love

Folks, whittling ain't carving and this book should not be confused with that art form. Whittling is a way to keep your mind and hands busy without watching the [...] tube. The author does a good job of passing on his skills to other whittlers. Twig whittling is an inexpensive way of creating a little give-away art for the people you come into contact with during lifes journey. Materials cost little or nothing; what else could you ask? Very detailed instructions, illustrations are informative and authors advice is invaluable. If you enjoy giving your pocket knife a workout while spending quality time inside your own mind, this book is worth the price.

Best book out there for menswear

I bought this book to help draft clothing patterns for myself, and I have to say, it is hands down the best book. Once you get through the sloper chapter developing your own sizes, making patterns from the design in this book take almost no time at all. Actually, this book is the most well explained patternmaking text book I own, and I own quite a few, because every step is clear and concise. The best part about this book is the step-by-step instructions so that you can follow so easily, and as a beginner/student this was so helpful to me so i don't get messed up. Most importantly, if you have ever tried to draft patterns from other textbooks you know they never seem to fit right, but this book's patterns have always fit me on the first try!

Great text for all levels.

Very well set out text book. The text is well written and illustrations are concise. Only comment would be that unless you knew what to look for in the fitting photos, you would be hard pushed to observe the errors on the garments. They're too subtle and need a bit more exaduration. I've been patternmaking for many years and even without drafting any of these blocks or slopers, I can tell that they will be more than adequate for a great staring point.
