Just a marvelous overview of the many regions of the USA with great color photographs throughout. I use it for Adult Intermediate ESL because the information is excellent and interesting and not dated (except the page on the Twin Towers which should be replaced.) Students enjoy this book too.

It's well bound for a paperback and mine has withstood many years' use.

About the Author
Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California dance band. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings.

Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater.

He was introduced to the world of children’s literature when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: "I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!"

Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear named Corduroy.

Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popular books for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low.

Just as charming as the English version

My husband (not a Spanish speaker) picked out this book for our 9-month-old daughter, and I (a Spanish speaker) read it aloud for us. We adults got a little sentimental as we both fondly remember reading this story in the original English as children. Beyond that, it's a very nice translation; it reminds me somewhat of the translation of Curious George (Jorge el Curioso). It's a little "old-fashioned" in that it uses longer clauses than many children's books do today (you know, more-than-5-word sentences), as the original does, and the characters (Corduroy, the little girl Lisa, the painter who finds the bear in his laundry) come across just as lovable. The author takes them seriously, and yet not too seriously. As for my daughter, I can't exactly tell you how well she likes it yet; she seemed to enjoy the pictures and the sound of my voice. Hopefully this will be one we'll read for several years to come!

Corduroy's at it again; getting himself into trouble as he searches for the perfect material to build his pocket! This is a nice Spanish translation of a fun book that my son loves to have read to him. Perfect for those teaching their children Spanish and for those brushing up on their skills.

I Can't Stop...

I am hooked on this series, sure there is some incest and rape scenes but it is about slavery, slaves were treated as chattel, realistically speaking what do you think went on back then. Look in some graveyards at very old headstones you will see 10 and 12 year olds who died in child birth, how do you think that happened? If you are looking for flowers, chaste virginal kisses this series is not for you. If you want to know how things really were read on, you will be transported down south, feel the heat, sweat, angst,joy of the slaves and masters alike, the splendor of the mansions to the squalor of the quarters! You won't want to put it down! Again there is love,sex and romance however if you enjoy harlequin/Victorian type Romance do not purchase, more than likely you will be offended.

I love all of George McNeill's books. I loved the first 3 books in this series, I was so excited for the 4th book to be released. I assumed the 4th book would be a new book but this is not a new book I read it in the 1980's in paperback!

The story line was interesting enough and I am satisfied that the villains received their due. However the frequent sentence fragments and misspelled words, or left out words left me wondering if I translated the true meaning of the sentence or paragraph. This, in spite of either the author or publisher making reference that these same errors were noted and eliminated for this punishment. It was very annoying having to guess so frequently at almost every page.
