Samkhya, also Sankhya, is one of the six schools of classical Indian philosophy. Sage Kapila is traditionally considered to be the founder of the Sankhya school, although no historical verification is possible. It is regarded as the oldest of the philosophical systems in India. This was later incorporated as being one of the six orthodox (astika) (that which recognizes vedic authority) systems of Hindu philosophy with the major text of the theistic school being the extant Sankhya Karika, written by Ishvara Krishna, circa 200 [AD]. There are no purely Samkhya schools existing today in Hinduism, but its influence is felt in Yoga and Vedanta schools of philosophy. Its philosophy regards the universe as consisting of two eternal realities: Purusha and Prakriti. It is therefore a strongly dualist and enumerationist philosophy. The Purusha is the centre of consciousness, whereas the Prakriti is the source of all material existence. The Samkhya school has deeply influenced the Hindu Yoga school of philosophy. They are sometimes referred together as Samkhya - yoga school.

FIVE LECTURES THAT GIVE AN EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF JUNG

This book contains five lectures (recorded nearly verbatim) that Jung gave in 1935 to the Institute of Medical Psychology in London. Each lecture concludes with questions and answers ("Discussions") from the 200 doctors who were present.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"These collective patterns I have called archetypes, using an expression of St. Augustine's... From these layers derive the contents of an impersonal, mythological character, in other words, the archetypes, and I call them therefore the impersonal or collective unconscious." (Lect. 2)
"There is nothing mystical about the collective unconscious. It is just a new branch of science, and it is really commonsense to admit the existence of unconscious collective processes. For, though a child is not born conscious, his mind is not a tabula rasa." (Lect. 2)
"I must repeat again that my methods do not discover theories, they discover facts, and I tell you what facts I discover with these methods. I cannot discover a castration complex or a repressed incest or something like that---I find only psychological facts, not theories." (Disc. 2)
"Tao can be anything. I use another word to designate it, but it is poor enough. I call it synchronicity." (Disc. 2)

Best insight into Jung

This book was the most concise, easily understood insight into Jung's personality and theories. It doesn't read like a boring text, but is rather a series of speeches that contains face to face challenges to Jung's work by his colleagues. Within his answers it becomes easier to glean and simplify his vast body of work within the topics he discussed in the lectures. If you wanna understand Jung but have trouble understanding his concepts, this book lays it out nicely.

About the Author
JAKOB ARJOUNI was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1964, the son of acclaimed German playwright Hans Gunter Michelson. He wrote numerous books, including the novels Chez Max and Magic Hoffmann, which was shortlisted for the IMPAC Award. But it is for his series of five mysteries featuring the Turkish immigrant detective Kemal Kayankaya for which he became best known. Bestsellers throughout Europe and the winner of the German Thriller Prize, they have also been turend into wildly popular movies in his home country. Arjouni died from pancreatic cancer at age forty-eight in January 2013.

ANSELM HOLLO is the author of more than thirty books, most recently the essay collection Caws & Causeries and Notes on the Possibilities and Attractions of Existence: New and Selected Poems 1965-2000, which received the San Francisco Poetry Center's Book Award for 2001. His translation of Pentii Saarikoski's Trilogy received the 2004 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.

The first Kayankaya novel

The Ergün family is troubled. Vasif Ergün emigrated to Germany from Turkey and worked as a garbage collector before he became involved with some shady characters. After his death, his son-in-law, Ahmed Hamul, followed in Vasif's questionable footsteps. Vasif's wife is the backbone of the family. His son Yilmaz is bitter that his father preferred the company of Hamul. Vasif's daughter Ayse has problems of her own, problems that other family members try to hide.

Now Hamul has been stabbed to death, his corpse unceremoniously dumped behind a brothel. The police aren't excited about the death of a Turk, so Hamul's widow, Ilter, turns to private investigator Kemal Kayankaya to find her husband's killers. Kayankaya's investigation is hampered by uncooperative family members, unhelpful police officers, and sinister figures who threaten his welfare.

Happy Birthday, Turk!, the first of Jakob Arjouni's Kayankaya novels, is a fine example of German noir. Kayankaya is a hard-drinking, easily angered outcast, an orphaned Turk who, although raised as a German citizen, endures the daily bigotry of Germans who don't like his dark skin and non-Aryan features. Kayankaya's intelligence and biting wit do nothing to ingratiate him with his fellow Germans -- not that he tries to win friends. More often, he tries to win fights with his powerful fists.

The plot of Happy Birthday, Turk! is tight and filled with twists that are interesting if not entirely surprising. The pace is swift. I admire writers of crime fiction who don't waste words. Arjouni captures people and locations (and food) in a few perfect sentences. A waiter: "He reminded me of a gay hippopotamus." A living room: "All it needed was an open drain, and the place could have been cleaned with a garden hose." Arjouni isn't Raymond Chandler, but he has his own distinctive style. Happy Birthday, Turk! isn't my favorite Kayankaya novel, but it is a strong start to an excellent (if short-lived) series.

German Noir

I stumbled on the four Kayankaya mysteries written by Jakob Arjouni searching for essays by the poet Anselm Hollo. While I was aware that he had worked as a translator, I had no idea these translations existed. And while this volume, for example, was translated in 1987, the same year the book appeared in the original German. I couldn't find a previous English language publication.

The back cover says that this is the second book in the series, but the publisher's web site identifies it as the first. Whatever, it is interesting to see how other cultures translate a genre that originated so squarely within the confines of a single country: the United States. The short answer on this German noir: fairly well.

The plot is too stereotyped noir to bother mentioning. None of the characters in the book are particularly virtuous, with the exception of the client, but the characters society expects to be the most morally reprehensible (immigrant heroin dealers) are more to be pitied than reviled, and it is those in power (particularly some police) who are simply evil. The component of the book that is original is the particular immigrant community (Turks in Frankfurt) and the use of language.

Most noir detectives are outside the magic circle because they are fallen (ex-cop being the most prevalent), drunks and disrespectful of authority. Our drunk of a disrespectful P.I. is most obviously on the far outside of society not because of these factors, but because he is the son of Turkish immigrants, raised in Frankfurt by a German couple after being orphaned as a boy. He doesn't speak Turkish, hasn't been to Turkey, and certainly doesn't feel any connection to that country. But in almost all of his interactions he is treated as an inferior. Nazism may be officially dead in 1980's Germany, but racial assumptions of superiority are alive and well throughout this book. There is a veneer of civility in his dealings with Aryan Germans, but it is thin and usually discarded within seconds of meeting our detective. Typical of noir P.I.'s he makes no attempt at sociability, and often jumps in to be rude (or violent) before the other has a chance to start things. This becomes old very fast, and the repartee between our tough guy and his adversaries is not up to even moderately good classic noir. And the fight scenes are very poorly described.

The other distinctive part of the book is its take on the flat though evocative language typical of the best in noir writing. There is a vitality in the language used early in the book. The author (and translator) were challenging the conventions of noir language to differentiate this book from earlier examples. "In the muggy air, jaws were tearing into breaded meat, lips smacking, vocal chords groaning and interspersing those noises with occasional speech. Tongues emerged to lick greasy chops." "Retirees peered into flaking entrance halls, licking the drool out of their wrinkles." By the the end of the book the author, and maybe the translator, are tired of the book and made no effort to construct a world with careful use of language. Instead the now tough guy P.I. is just smashing guys around in an all too predictable manner.

Melville House...any particular reason why you printed this not inexpensive book on such cheap paper?

Interesting, if a bit strange

There are any number of private eye novelists around, and I'm one of those people who are always looking for something different. This book, a first novel about a man of Turkish descent who works in Frankfurt, Germany, as a private eye, is definitely different. It comes with the usual trappings of a detective novel, but it's a good story nontheless.
Kemal Kayankaya is Turkish by birth but was raised by Germans, and has little left of his heritage. He works in Frankfurt as a private eye, and is very stereotypical: he drinks too much, fools around with prostitutes, cracks wise when he would be wise to be serious, and is doggedly determined to solve his case. In the current installment, a Turkish man has been murdered and his wife thinks the police have no interest in solving the crime because of his race. Kayankaya dives into the case face first, getting into fistfights, having a car chase him, and getting teargassed, in between pistol-whipping various suspects.
This is a good book: I would recommend it. It *does* have the dated feel that a lot of European stuff has in contrast to American movies and television. You always think they're looking to Chandler rather than Robert B. Parker for their inspiration. Everything's *very* hardboiled. That being said, this is a fun book.

Another strong installment in the Souls of Fire series that I thoroughly enjoyed

The best thing by far about this series continues to be Emberly's character and FLAMEOUT was no exception. I just simply love how she's so fierce and determined, never wavering from her cause. She's willing to sacrifice anything and everything for others at all times, and more often than not this selfless nature comes at a great cost to her. She's come so close to death more times than I can count, and her injury and scar count are countless. All this is more than admirable, and draws me to her. But what really makes me continually fall in love with her character is that despite all that strength, she's so vulnerable as well. It would have been so easy after everything she's been through and all the so many lifetimes she's endured with heartbreak for it all to have made her bitter. And yet she's not, and so selfless, and I love her for it. All this was only further proved in FLAMEOUT as other people she cared about, even if only peripherally were held over her head as blackmail, and not even for one second does she think of faltering. As I said, it makes her vulnerable, yet so strong at the same time.

The romance continues to be messy, messy, messy in this series. Of course what else could it be when phoenixes are cursed to always have heartbreak in their lives. They fall in love once per lifetime and it's always destined to end badly. That being said, since this lifetime's love, Sam isn't completely out of the picture, but acts like he hates her instead, well it makes things a bit dicey. Emberly has found comfort, but not love of course, in the arms of a fire fae named Jackson, but there were hints in this book that it won't be long term. I'm glad she's found a bit of peace, but you can still feel that insane tension between her and Sam. If you had asked me previously if there was a chance for them, I probably would have said no. However, they just keep getting thrust back towards each other and when it all boils down to it, despite his anger, Sam keeps protecting her and risking his life for hers. So I'm holding out hope that they can break the vicious phoenix heartbreak cycle and find a way to overcome their past.

As far as the plot on this one, it's funny, it felt like both a lot and yet not a whole lot actually happened. While reading, I felt everything moved at a very steady pace, and I felt fully engrossed. However after finishing the book I realized that aside from the last few chapters, nothing major actually happened. It was a bunch of investigating and more posturing and threats that build up to the ending events. That being said, considering I didn't realize the lack of real overall plot momentum until I sat down to write this review, I don't think it's a problem at all. In the moment of reading, I was fully engaged, and in the end that's all I ask for.

FIREBRAND is another strong installment in the Souls of Fire series that I thoroughly enjoyed. Keri Arthur truly is a powerhouse in the genre and I've yet to read a book of her's that I haven't loved, and FIREBRAND is no exception. Fans of the series, and Keri's works will be more than pleased.

Interspersed With Intense Moments, But Mostly Slow

Technically I'm giving this a 3.5. I boosted the rating because I love the world-building and the mythology behind the supernatural creatures, particularly the fae and phoenixes. That said, I honestly think too much time was spent away from the story. I struggled to remember who everyone was and why they mattered, especially characters who didn't have as much impact in this story as they had in others, i.e.: Sam and Rochelle. I'm sad to say I found myself glazing over a lot of the story and the investigation. Maybe I'm in a slump, but I found the investigating to be boring. I'm also a little annoyed with Sam and Emberly. I know the crux is supposed to the phoenix curse but honestly, I just don't find myself liking Sam and think he ought to treat Em better. All this has been complaining and nitpicking, but truthfully, I really liked the action scenes, particularly their visual descriptions. They were truly intense, especially near the end. There were a lot of unanswered questions, which lead to another book next year (ugh, another year? Seriously?), and the ending essentially forces me to buy the next book. I wouldn't have an issue with that, except that as a whole, the story felt like a final novel rather than a new addition, if that makes sense. Hopefully there will be more to liven the plot the next time around.

My Review:

Flameout was a book I requested without doing my research first simply because it sounded fantastic and I loved the cover.

Unfortunately I didn't realize it was the third installment of an already on going series that picks up directly where the last book left off. The biggest problem I had was trying to follow along with the on going plot and character drama because unless you've read the previous book there is a giant black hole where all the background history belongs.

That being said I'm intrigued by what I read however being lost through the entire thing I mostly enjoyed the repeated pornographic sex scenes which seemed to dominate the book more than the actual plot did so if you're up for rubbing one out mid page pause feel free because its hot enough to get not just our cast off but the reader as well.

The rest while interesting was mostly disjointed because there isn't much explanation for any current issues between cast mates and or the beaucoup bad guys however what I have read has hooked me enough that I'm interested enough to back track to the previous books to find out what's going on.

A must read

I adore short story collections and this is an absolute favourite that I keep returning to. Aesthetically pleasing to look at with the wonderful art work and design, the stories easily hold their own. You can either dip in for a quick read or sit and turn page after page, thoroughly immersed in the flow of the book. There's a sense of nostalgia and honesty in the stories that struck a chord, and I found much to relate to throughout the collection. I love how each story feels very natural; as if you're being allowed a glimpse into people's lives. Matthew's style is highly original and a breath of fresh air.

The Nineties With A Vengeance

A NEW HYMNAL FOR COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS (1992) is an odd pew hymnal and if anything, its pecularities have become more apparent in the over 20 years since its introduction. Layout is bland, with common names of hymns titled only slightly larger (and not emphasized) than the overall proceedings. The not-quite-complete chanted Psalter (hymnodists must hate Psalm 49!) intrudes partway into the hymns for no reason of logic or sequence I could discover and is followed by some sung Psalms in regular layout. The 575 hymnic entries are an unimpressive total considering that the Psalms included and even the antiphon for them are part of the count. There was no room in this book for "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning," "Let All Things Now Living," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "All Things Bright and Beautiful," or "O Little Town of Bethlehem" using the more common tune setting ST. LOUIS. Yet there is room for some odd incursions, apparently under the name of inclusiveness: "Who is She, neither male nor female?" asks no. 15, apparently unaware that the first three words made the rhetorical question unnecessary and impossible. "Guide Me, O, Thou Great Jehovah" was rewritten to "Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer"; yet to me it is just as archaic to use "ever" to mean "always" as it was to strike the pronoun "Thou." The retail price of this book is outlandish (at this time, $38.00) and for that amount of money one could buy two of almost any denominational hymnal, or three of most nondenominational hymnals, any of which are more likely to serve.
