K-Gr 2-Ziefert has retold a pleasant Russian folktale in simple language and short sentences suitable for beginning readers. An old couple who "wanted a little boy or a little girl very much" build one out of snow. When the old lady kisses the snow child, she comes to life, bringing joy to all around her. However, when spring comes, the snow child is forced to go where it is cold. The sad couple feel they will never be happy again, until winter arrives once more and the youngster returns. The book is illustrated with exquisite collages-autumnal browns and oranges give way to wintry whites and blues-with visual clues that make the entire reading experience a pleasurable one. An appealing addition to easy-reader shelves.-Anne Knicker-bocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX

From Booklist
Gr. 1-2. Drawing elements from many traditional stories, Ziefert weaves together a folktale written and designed for beginning readers. As in the "Gingerbread Boy," an older couple longing for children creates a magical child, this time from snow instead of dough. All winter, the couple loves their snow child, but when the warm weather comes, she disappears. The couple mourns her loss but rejoices again when the magical girl returns with the next winter. Told with simple vocabulary and sentences even the earliest readers can puzzle out, the story is nicely complimented by Julia Zanes' folksy watercolor collages, which reinforce rather than overwhelm the text. A lovely offering from Puffin's Easy-to-Read series. Gillian Engberg

Great Illustrations
By A Customer
This is a sweet retelling of an old tale, but what makes it prticularly good are the charming illustrations by Julia Zanes. Both my six year old and 10 year old daughters love it and we've given several copies as presents this winter.

Unrealistic even for a children's book.
By Mind Blowing Review Girl
The Snow Child by Harriet Ziefert was about and older couple who could not have a child. This made them very sad, though they still loved each other. One day, they noticed all of the little kids playing out in the snow and decided to join them. Instead of making a snow man, they decided to make a snow child. They gave her a body with arms and legs, eye, ears, nose, and even hair. They topped the snow child off with a dress.
When the woman kissed the snow child, it came to life. This made them both very happy. They finally had a child. They prepared her a bed inside, but the child refused to sleep in it. She needed to stay outside where it was cold, so they made her a bed of ice and she slept in it.
When spring began, the snow child ran away to follow the cold. This devastated the husband and wife, but when winter came, so did the child.
This book seemed unrealistic even for a children’s book. There should have been some sort of explanation as to how the snow came to life, even if it was something as simple as “And the woman’s want for a child was so great that when she kissed the snow, it came to life.”
The illustrations were unique. It looks like the illustrator cut up pieces of magazine-like paper of various fabrics and threw them together. Everything was very flat-looking. Some of the cutouts were very realistic, and you could see the threads in the clothing, whereas others looked drawn and dotted with white-out. The spring section of the book was very colorful.
Overall, this was by no means by favorite children’s book, but it was okay.
